Linnormr (Ensnaring Serpent)

from Bestiengesang by Nøkken + The Grim

/

about

Linnormr is "ensnaring serpent" in Old Norse, and is commonly known as the Lindworm. This is similar to a dragon, often a white serpent. Lindworms occupy a place of spiritual power and circularity of life, enrapturing trance and connection to natural forces. One might recall the ouroboros or the serpent eating its own tail, symbolizing the concept of life-death. The dwarf Fafnir in the Völsunga saga is transformed into a Lindworm and owes his power to a hypnotizing symbol, the Ægishjálmr, or "helm of awe," a magical stave.
