theexplodingogre A complicated album of both synths and violin infused with a spiritual nature. This is a dark foreboding album that seems to lament in our lost of humanity in a digital age. Favorite track: Blue Ritual.

about

“Treason to Our Nature” is the debut album of Nøkken + The Grim, recorded from 2017-2018. Each track integrates live-recorded improvisation at The Thicket in Austin, Texas with composed electronics and studio recordings. The album expresses interconnections to nature and other-than-human life in our contemporary era, told through the tale of an ongoing war between Mother Nature and industrialized civilization. In the middle of this conflict, three nature spirits—Nøkken, the shapeshifter, Peryton, the black stag, and Ajatar, the witch of the woods—find themselves channeling songs of old mingling with new electronic frontiers to summon back humanity’s vital connection to the living world. The music snakes between styles in a surreal, animalistic revelry, drawing heavy influences from metal, folk, blues, modern classical and Nordic and Magyar folklore. This primal music pulls from the undercurrents of animal sensing and being prior to explicit categories and the lines humanity draws across the world—a wild cry through wordless music. The conflicted intertwining of nature and technology is reflected in the composition of the tracks themselves, which weave together the interstices of animal organicism with synthetic soundscapes.

-ABOUT THE BAND-

Nøkken + The Grim was formed in Austin, Texas in 2015. Nøkken, in Norwegian folklore, is a shapeshifting water spirit, brook horse (bäckahäst) and violinist, who, in bygone times, lured trespassing humans to drown in rivers through seductive fiddling pulled from the heart of nature. Nøkken is joined by Peryton, The Black Stag on electronics, keys and clarinet. Formerly The White Stag of Hungarian legend, his fur and feathers have turned black with the soot of modern industry. Ajatar, the Finnish dragoness, is the misunderstood mother of woodland spirits, accused of being a bringer of pestilence, and, like Tiamat, she sometimes appears as a woman. Ajatar performs on viola. These shapeshifters of Scandinavian and Eastern European folklore have emerged from the forests and streams to perform animalistic music for human civilization at the brink of environmental catastrophe.
